TIRUCHI: The over 150-year-old Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Headquarters Hospital here has extricated itself from the trouble of two-hour daily power cut, effected throughout the State, by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).

The hospital has made a one-time payment of Rs.8-lakh to the TANGEDCO from its electrical maintenance fund to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

The hospital would be saving a lot on diesel, which it has been using for running the master generator during the power-cut period everyday.

Master generator

The hospital attached to the K.A..P.Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi, has been incurring a daily expenditure of Rs.3,000 to Rs.4,000 towards its spending on diesel for its master generator said Dr.A.Karthikeyan, College Dean.

The one-time payment to the TANGEDCO was a better proposition than spending money every day on diesel, he added.

Power sourced from the master generator has been utilised only in the out-patient block, casualty, intensive care unit, intensive medical care unit, triage block, and the operation theatre.

The remaining parts of the hospital have remained without power during the power-cut period everyday.

The 621-bedded hospital caters to about 3,500 out-patients every day apart from the over 600 in-patients.

Uninterrupted power supply will be of great help to doctors, patients, and attendants, Mr.Karthikeyan said.

New x-ray plant

Dr.Karthikeyan said a new x-ray unit had been established at the casualty block at a cost of Rs. 4 lakh. The new facility will be commissioned by the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on Tuesday.

The casualty and the accident emergency theatre had been renovated at a cost Rs. 6.5 lakh, said Dr. M.A. Aleem, Vice Principal of the College.

A new multi-storeyed building for maternity and child health, with funding from the World Bank, is proposed to be constructed inside the hospital at a cost of Rs. 8 crore by the State Health Department, the hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr.S. Paneerselvam said.

A World Bank team has already inspected the site for the proposed building, he added.
