TIRUCHI: Using helmets lowers the risk of mortality during road accidents.
The death rate in the road accidents could be brought down by 59 per cent if the two-wheelers riders wear helmets, said M.A..Aleem, Vice-Principal, K.A..P.Viswanatham Government Medical College.
In a special interaction session on the topic ‘protection of head injuries in road accidents' organised by the Anna Science Centre-Planetarium in connection with the National Road Safety Week here on Friday, Dr.Aleem said that the accident rate in the country is very alarming and the country tops the list in road accidents.
One road accident take place every minute and one fatal accident every four and a half minutes in India, according to a recent survey.
About 69 per cent of the victims of road accidents are two-wheeler riders.
The deaths are on the rise despite the government taking various initiatives to create awareness on road safety. Wearing helmets will reduce the accident rate by 33 per cent, he said.
Providing first aid during the golden hour after the accidents will play a big role in saving the valuable lives. Right procedure should be adopted in giving first aid and arresting of blood should be done with immediate effect in case of over bleeding, Dr.Aleem said.
Special programmes should be conducted regularly to create awareness on prevention road accidents by strictly adhering to the road rules.
T.M.Alagiri Swamy Raju, project director in-charge, Anna Science Centre-Planetarium, and others spoke. Students from different colleges participated in the programme and interacted with Dr.Aleem.
