Everybody Knows Prof Dr.M.A.Aleem,M.D.,D.M., (Neuro) for his dedicated rural neurological health care services, and the development of Neurology speciality in the Central Tamilnadu.
Prof Dr.Aleem M.D.,D.M., (Neuro) a rural Neurologist / Neuroscientist was the Former Dean I/C vice principal HOD& professor of Neurology KAPV Government Medical college& MGM Government hospital Trichy. He is graduated from Madras University in 1980. He has received his MD., General medicine from Bharadhidasan University in 1986 and his DM,Neurology through the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.M Medical University in 1999.ln 2001 as IAN sponsored candidate he has undergone training at University college of London' Institute of Neurology queen' s Square London in the field of epilepsy . He was the visiting professor for Annamalai University's Raja Muthaiya Chettiar Medical college and hospital chidambram. A visiting consultant Neurologist at Ordinance factory Govt of India Trichy . for 16 years from 2004 He is deeply interested in medical education and services since 1986. He has orated, presented and published more than 107 research papers in neurology and General medicine at various National and International, conference and Journals.
TEACHING CARRIER IN NEUROLOGY
Prof.Dr.M.A.Aleem is having teaching experiences of over 19 years in Neurology
Dr.M.A.Aleem has started his neurological teaching carrier as Tutor from 8.2.2002 to 7.2.2003 at KAPV Goverment Medical CollegeTrichy Tamilnadu India.
Then he was designated as Assistant professor in Neurology from 8.2.2003 to 16.4.2007 in the same institution.
Then he has got promoted as Associate professor in Neurology to Tirunelveli Medical Government college in Tirunelveli Tamilnadu and there he carried his teaching from 23.4.2007 to 31.5.2008 .
After that he was promoted as Head of Department of Neurology and Associate professor of Neurology of KAPV Goverment Medical college Trichy Tamilnadu on 1. 6.2008 to 22.10.2009.
Then was promoted as Professor and Head of the department of Neurology in same institution from 23. 10 2009 to 24.2.2010 .
He has hold the additional post of Vice Principal of the KAPV Goverment Medical Trichy Tamilnadu India along with HoD and Professor of Neurology from 25.2.2010 to 31.3.2010 . During that period he hold the additional post of Dean incharge of the KAPV Goverment Medical Trichy from 1.4.2010 to 10..6.2010.
Then he continued as Vice Principal HOD and Professor of Neurology from 10.6 2010 and retired from Tamilnadu Goverment Medical education service as vice Principal HOD and Professor of Neurology of KAPV Government Medical College Trichy on 31.12.2014.
After his services in the Tamilnadu Goverment Medical education service, he joined as the professor and senior consultant ar Neurology Department at Dhanalakshami Srinivasan Medical college and hospital Siruvachur Perambalur Tamilnadu india from 1.1 2015 to till date
M.A.Aleem is a Emeritus Professor of Neurology at The Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University Chennai Tamilnadu India from
25.8.2018 for 4 years.
As on today his total teaching experience in Neurology is more than 19 years from 2002
For acquiring distinction as Physician
He was certified as a Fellow of Royal college of Physicians and surgeons Glasgow in 1.10.2019. For his contribution to the Indian neurological science he was elected as a fellow in The Indian Academy of Neurology a National organisation for neurology in 2019. He is also a Fellow of Association of Physicians of India a national for physicians in India from 2003.
Now he is the Emeritus Professor at the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University of Government of Tamilnadu From 2018 for 4years
He is also the senior consultant neurologist and epileptologist at ABC Hospital Trichy He is a visiting professor for Dhanalakhmi Srinivasan medical college and hospital perambalur since 2015.He is the visiting neurology Consultant for Apollo SpecialityHospital Trichy since 2016.
CONTRIBUTION TO NEUROLOGY
Prof.Dr.M.A.Aleem is having the research experience from 1997 to till date as a DM Post graduate student , as a Tutor , Asst. Professor, Associate Professor and as an Emeritus Professor of Neurology. I have 44 Publications and 48 presentations of my research works in Neurology in my credit. As a DM Post graduate M.A .ALEEM’s research work at Madurai Medical College, Madurai (MMC),he has published 11 research papers and it has 23 citations (https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/5855891_M_A_Aleem) . As an Assistant Professor of neurology my research works were accepted by the World Federation of Neurology and I have presented my papers on 1.Seizure related injuries in rural epileptic women from southern India in the World Congress of Neurology (WCN) 2001 London. 2.Iatrogenic Seizures – A clinical study from southern India in WCN 2001 London.3.Circardian onset of stroke in young rural southern Indian population in WCN 2005 Sydney. 4. Study of psychogenic non epileptic Seizure in southern Indian rural population at WCN 2009 at Bangkok in Thailand. 5.Diffusion MR imaging in status epileptics – Reversibility a study from southern India at WCN 2015 Santiago Chile.
I have also presented a paper on " A Study of Seizures in Rural Adolescents in Trichy at 24th WCN 2019 Dubai. My Paper EP0414 " The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Rural Southern Indian Epileptic Patients " is accepted by the WCN 2021 Rome.

My research works was accepted by the International League Against Epilepsy and I have presented the paper on Cerebral calcification and epilepsy in rural population at 25thInternational Epilepsy Congress(IEC) 2003 Lisbon Portugal and a paper on southern Indian study on Iatrogenic seizure in 26th IEC 2005 Paris. Both were published as abstract in that year Epilepsia Journal. I have also presented my neurological research work in IANCON, and Neurocon.I have grant from Government of Tamilnadu state research committee to do the research work on circadian rhythm and stroke in southern Indian rural population for one year in 2004.I am a guide for Neurology research work with EEG & fMRI at Department of instrumentation and control. Engineering at National institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy for PhD scholar from 2013 to 2016.
I am a Life member in IAN a National Body for Neurology since 1999 (L M 431). Served in IAN as a National Executive Committee member (2002 – 2005). I was appointed by IAN as an organising Secretary to conduct the 2010 IANCON for first time in 2nd tier city like Trichy my home town . As per IAN Instruction I have organised a preconference workshop during IANCON 2010 at Trichy. I am also served as a member in the organising committee of IANCON - 2000 Madurai and IANCON 2003 VIZAK and IANCON 2004 Nagpur .I have taken part in all IAN instructed Indian National Brain week activities, world Brain day activities and other Neurological awareness activities.I have contributed articles for the Reviews in Neurology on Myasthenic syndrome and on cerebral malaria in 2000 IANCON, and on Hypertension management in stroke in 2003 IANCON.I have chaired sessions and presented papers in IANCON many times. Prof Dr. Aleem has created and established the department of neurology at KAPV GOVT medical college and MGM GOVT hospital Trichy instrumental in bringing the DM Neurology course . He had also a role in starting the DM Neurology higher specialty Course at Thirunelveli Govt medical college in 2007. He has published 11 books in regional language on Neurology topics to create awareness among people. He is the examiner in the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR medical University. He is the president for Trichy Neuro club if Trichy and the current Secretary for Neurologist association of Tiruchirappalli. He is the founder of NAT at Trichy 2017.He is also instrumental in bringing the International Epilepsy Day by ILAE/IBE in 2015. He had best administrator award from the Trichy district collect in 2013.He also had Dr. Banumathy Muruganathan award for the excellence in medical publication in Tamil by Tamilnadu Indian Medical Association (IMA) in 2008.He was nominated as an "Epilepsy purple day Ambassador" in 2012 by EANS Newyork.He was nominated as Trichy district welfare fund committee life member by district collector and Trichy DWFC committee from 2017. Prof Dr.M.A.Aleem ‘s neurological care created awareness about neurological illness not only in urban area but also particularly in rural areas in and around Tiruchirppalli. and Central Tamilnadu. By creating this awareness time between the onset of neurological symptoms and seeking of medical help has been drastically reduced in our rural population residing in the central part of Tamil Nadu
Prof Dr.M.A.Aleem ‘s neurological care and health awareness camps created awareness about neurological illness among the urban as well as rural people. So, the people become aware of seeking medical assistance as soon as they develop neurological problems.
Prof Dr.Aleem‘s books on neurological health awareness and his research work on neurology are valuable to plan treatment strategies for rural people with neurological disorders.
Prof Dr.M.A.Aleem is regularly conducting health awareness camp besides publishing neurology health awareness books on various neurological problems. He is also doing a lot of neurological research work and whish is very useful to plan treatment strategies for rural poor people with neurological disorders.

He was also a joint Organizing secretary for 2000 IANCON at Madurai. Dr. Aleem has contributed articles for the reviews in Neurology released by IAN and he has chaired sessions in IANCON. HE is the Life Member of Association in physicians of India (API )since 1986. He is in office of JAPI as National advisory board member in 2002.He has Served as an EC member in Trichy API in 1996-98. He has as served as a Treasure for Trichy API during 2002-2004. He is in the organising committee for 4th state Level API conference at Trichy in 2008 and for CME Programme Organised by API at Trichy in 1994-1995. He is also a fellow of API from 2008.

Prof Dr. Aleem joined as a medical officer in Thuvaran kurichy PHC in 1986. He become Tutor in Neurology at KAPVGMC in 2002and become Assistant Professor in Neurology at KAPVGMC in 2003.Promoted as Associate Professor in Neurology at Tirunelveli Medicalin 2007. Dr. Aleem becomes Professor of Neurology and HOD department of Neurology at Trichy KAPVGMC in 2008. Dr. Aleem have a distinguished administrative service at KAPVGMC in Trichy.
He was served as MCI Nodal officer from 2008-2009 and he has served as a vigilance officer at AGM Govt hospital of KAPVGMC in 2009-2010 and worked as an administrative officer at AGM Govt Hospital of KAPVGMC in 2009-2010. He was a medical superintendent incharge for AGM Govt Hospital Trichy in 2011 and Dean incharge for Trichy KAPVGMC in 2009 . He served as vice Principal of Trichy KAPVGMC from 2010 till 2014. He was retired as vice Principal, HOD Professor of Neurology on 31.12.2014 from KAPVGMC Trichy.

The 164 years old Trichy smart city railway station handling over 15000 passengers per day is going to have a new second entrance to help the people to reach the station from airport, new bus terminal and through various new road over bridge. This will definitely reduce congestion of traffic and people crowd in and around Trichy railway junction
As the redevelopment process
the eastern side new second entrance will have new station building with ticket counters, circulating area parking facilities and with restaurant facilities
The new second entrance is going to have new station building, ticket counters, circulating area, and parking facilities along with new wide entrance and exit road devided by meridian
The new second entrance works are in progress and they are expected to be completed in a month or two.
Other than this, establishment of 8th platform, installation of of escalators and new lifts are in progress at Trichy railway junction as the station redevelopment process to receive more trains including vande bharat and for people's comfortable transport to station, problem free train travel with comfortable waiting and inside station movement of passengers.

International Epilepsy Day is a special awareness day that takes place on the second Monday in February to shine a light on the challenges faced by people living with epilepsy. It takes place on February 13 this year.
Epilepsy, also known as seizure disorder, is the fourth most common neurological disorder and one of the oldest-known medical conditions.
The condition causes electrical activity in the brain to stop for a short time, which leads to recurrent seizures. Even though 65 million people in the world live with epilepsy, there is still some stigma around the disease.
Almost every year, a theme is chosen to guide the events of International Epilepsy Day .
In 2023, International Epilepsy Day will focus on the stigma people living with epilepsy face around the world.
Epilepsy affects almost every aspect of the life of the person diagnosed with the disease. For many people living with epilepsy, the stigma attached to the disease is more difficult to deal with than the disease itself.
The stigma of epilepsy can discourage people from seeking treatment and has consequences for the quality of life and social inclusion.
Stigma with epilepsy can be reduced when people are given the opportunity to discuss the effects of stigma on their lives.
Educating people about epilepsy and dispelling myths can also reduce stigma.
International Epilepsy Day exists to educate the general public about epilepsy and to teach people how to provide better care for people living with the disorder.
Epilepsy is one of the world’s oldest-known medical conditions, with records dating back to the beginning of recorded history. Of course, back then, it was treated as a spiritual condition. In 2000 B.C., an ancient Mesopotamian text described a person who underwent an exorcism under the influence of a moon god. Ancient Babylonians attributed seizures to possession by evil spirits. The ancient Greeks also considered epilepsy to be spiritual possession, but they associated it with genius and divine interventions.
The stigma associated with epilepsy is also historical. In ancient Rome, people did not eat or drink from the same plates or pots as people living with epilepsy. Up to the second half of the 20th century, in some parts of Africa, epilepsy was believed to be contagious and a result of possession, witchcraft, or poisoning.
Epilepsy is such a part of documented history that it is mentioned in the “Code of Hammurabi,” the longest, best-organized, and best-preserved legal text from the ancient Near East. In the Code, it is referred to as a condition under which a slave may be returned for a refund. Epilepsy also gets a mention in an ancient Egyptian medical text called “The Edwin Smith Papyrus.”
The oldest detailed record of epilepsy is found in a 10th Century B.C Babylonian cuneiform medical text called the “Sakikku.”
Hippocrates in 5th Century B.C rejects Epilepsy as a Spiritual Problem
At a time when most people treated epilepsy as being spiritual, Hippocrates insists that it is a medically treatable problem originating in the brain.
The First Effective Anti-seizure Medication was Introduced in19th Century .
An antiepileptic medication, bromide, is used effectively for the first time.
A New Definition of Epilepsy
Dr. Robert Fisher, leader of the International League Against Epilepsy taskforce, publishes a new definition of the disease in an editorial called “A Revised Definition of Epilepsy.”

Epilepsy is a treatable chronic neurological disorder which is often linked to supernatural activities, due to lack of knowledge and awareness among the common people. The beliefs that outbreak of epilepsy as an unnatural or supernatural activities can be most frequently seen in rural population.
Even well educated people have misconceptions about epilepsy and marriage
It is one of the fourth most common neurological diseases, globally. In many parts of the world, people with epilepsy and their families suffer from stigma and discrimination. Hence, it is important to know the truth behind this condition.
People with epilepsy are completely normal between the episodes. With proper treatment and medication, 70 per cent of the patients with epilepsy can be cured, and they can lead a normal life. Every day, people with epilepsy are taking up demanding jobs, playing sports, and raising kids.
Myth: People with epilepsy cannot marry, have children and lead a normal family life.
Fact: People with epilepsy can marry, become pregnant, have children and a good family life.
Person with epilepsy can have a successful married life. There are many family members who have previously had epilepsy during their childhood but now, are living a normal married life. In our society, there is a fear of rejection of marriage proposal on disclosure of the disorder. But research on this condition has concluded that it’s better to disclose it if a person has this disorder prior to their marriage. Contrary to popular belief, the chances of having a normal, healthy and successful pregnancy is more than 90%, without any effect on the baby.
Until December 1999, India was the only country in the world with "an absurd law on epilepsy and marriage.
According to the Indian Marriage Act, 1955 and the Special Marriage Act, 1958, a marriage can be solemnized if at the time of marriage neither party suffered insanity or epilepsy. In 1976, the Government of India amended the
Marriage Act (1955) and special Marriage Act (1954). As per this Marriage Laws
Amendment Act 1976, a person subjected to recurrent attacks of insanity or epilepsy cannot have a legally valid marriage and such a marriage shall be voidable, resulting in divorce.
This was challenged in court and in August 1997
Government of India responded to the courts order mentioning that the legislation to remove the grievance is in the offing. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on November 30th 1999 and the Lok Sabha followed suit on December 20th 1999 during BJP regime with Vajpayee as Prime minister.
Today a person with epilepsy in india can have a legally valid marriage and epilepsy is no
more an illness to claim for divorce.
The purpose of this International Epilepsy day is to heighten awareness, remove the stigma around epilepsy and create awareness among people about epilepsy.

International Epilepsy Day is important to breaks a culture of silence
When people speak about epilepsy, it is often in hushed tones, as if talking about the disease out loud would summon a seizure. This culture of silence means that there is a lack of information and a lot of misinformation about the disease. International Epilepsy Day works to erase the stigma surrounding epilepsy and provide some helpful information about it.
Too many people die of epilepsy.Every year, more than one in 1,000 people die suddenly due to epilepsy. Part of this is because, in many countries, they do not receive appropriate treatment because people, do not have enough information about available treatment for this disease.

artists and painters have been engaged for the drive. Besides completing the drawings, the Corporation has given credit to the companies that had sponsored for the drive.
It is observed that no one had pasted posters or drawn political or commercial graffiti on public walls, where the paintings of the Corporation were drawn. Many felt that it was a good attempt to protect public walls from illegal graffiti, which often had elements to divert the attention of the motorists and passers-by.
“It is needless to say that the colourful, artistic and thematic paintings have added beauty to the city. It is a good attempt to protect the public walls from the diverting graffiti,” says M.A. Aleem, a civic activist of the city.
It was said that the Corporation officials had given clear instructions to the printers and those engaged in pasting posters not to deface the walls, where paintings had been drawn, under any circumstances. Some of the prominent hospitals, companies and leading trade and business houses have been involved in the drive. They have provided funds under the CSR policy.
Corporation Commissioner R. Vaithinathan said that several prominent places had been covered under the drive. Colourful paintings would be drawn on all prominent public walls and under the flyovers. It had been decided to cover the centre medians in different parts of the city. Officials had been asked to monitor those violating rules and regulations on drawing graffiti on public walls.
