TIRUCHI: State Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam on Sunday launched the medical insurance scheme for newborns to reduce Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) at Kaanakiliyanallur village in Lalgudi taluk.

The IMR in Tiruchi district is 23.4 per thousand children against the State average of 31.

The scheme provides for treatment for the value of up to one lakh rupees for complications like respiratory problems and pneumonia in infants till the age of one year.

The Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi has sanctioned Rs. 10 crore for this scheme this year and assured to allocate Rs.15 crore in the next fiscal. This is in addition to the benefits accruing from the Kalaignar Insurance scheme for the eligible families.

Of the 1.34 crore families covered under the scheme, 2.82 lakh persons have undergone treatment so far, Mr. Paneerselvam said, after inaugurating a Primary Health Centre established at a cost of Rs.22 lakh at Kaanakiliyanallur.

A total of six new PHCs have been started in the last five years in the district, and eight PHCs have been upgraded at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh each. Citing the sanction of Rs. 50 crore to upgrade the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Medical College Hospital; the presence of over 1,500 PHCs with full-fledged paraphernalia and medical staff throughout the State; and the 24-hour 108 emergency ambulance service, Mr. Paneerselvam said the medical facility in Tamil Nadu was the best in the country.

Only during the DMK regime, the people have benefitted the most in the forms of waiver of farm loans to the tune of Rs. 7,000 crore, free bus passes involving an expenditure of Rs. 300 crore, pre-natal and post-natal benefit scheme and marriage assistance scheme.

Salaries of all government employees have increased substantially after the implementation of the sixth-pay commission, he said.

The Health Minister announced that the PHC at neighbouring Peruvalappur would be upgraded into a 30-bedded facility, responding to a request made earlier by the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru.

Expressing relief at the start of the PHC in Kanakiliyanallur, his native village, Mr. Nehru said the villagers were so far under compulsion to travel several kilometres for medical treatment.

Collector in-charge K.Petchiammal, the Dean of KAP Viswanatham Medical College A. Karthikeyan, and the Vice-Principal M.A..Aleem were present.
