Dear Editor

COVID-19 Variants of Concern (VoC) in India

In India, current COVID-19 cases are declining and it is around 28 daily cases per million population.

At present the active COVID-19 cases are 1.36% and the COVID-19 related death rate is 1.34%.

As of 23.07.2021, in India, the total number doses of COVID-19 vaccines given were 423,417,030. Till today (23.07.2021), over 89,471,879 (6.41%) were fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

As per India's COVID-19 situation report 77 which was released on 21.07.21 by WHO, about 20,116 COVID-19 variants cases were registered in India, which includes 4107 cases of Alpha variant, 215 Beta variant, one case of Gamma variant,15,754 cases of Delta variant and 39 cases of Delta plus variant.

According to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium of Government (INSACOG), the Delta variant continues to be dominant in new COVID-19 cases across India.

There is currently no evidence of any new Delta sub-lineage variant that is of greater concern than Delta variant in India.

The other COVID-19 Variants are at a lower rate and are declining in India.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that most of the clinical cases in vaccine breakthrough were infected with the Delta variant but only 9.8% cases required hospitalisation, while fatality was found to be restricted to 0.4%.

So far no cases of the Lambda variant have been reported in India.

In India, the INSACOG jointly initiated by the Union Ministry of Health and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the ICMR, is a consortium of 28 national laboratories monitoring the genomic variations in SARS-CoV-2.
