Indian Red Cross launches free hearse service

A free hearse service operated through the Indian Red Cross Society was launched at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in the city on Tuesday.

Though mortuary vans were being operated through voluntary organisations at a nominal cost, the vans have been refurbished and now operated through the Red Cross free of cost.

Two vans have been refurbished at a cost of Rs.15 lakh. The service would be launched first in the urban areas and later extended to rural areas, officials said. Five such vans are to be deployed in the rural areas of the district soon.

The service can be availed by the toll free telephone number: 155377. Bodies would be transported free of cost from the hospital to any part of the state.

The service was launched on Tuesday in the presence of Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, A.Karthikeyan, Dean, K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College, T.Mohanasundaram, Joint Director of Medical and Health Services, J.J.L.Gnanaraj, chairman, Red Cross Society, Tiruchi, and other officials.
