Flood safety precautions
- M.A.Aleem Neurologist Member Trichy District Welfare Fund Committee
Following the release of 2.17 lakh cusecs of water from the Mettur dam, low-lying areas near Kollidam and Cauvery rivers in Trichy and Thanjavur districts are on high alert.

The following precautions are useful to prevent any catastrophic during flood alerts

Be aware of the flash flood.
Take all flood safety measures.
Do not enter flood-prone areas as precautions during floods.
Keep the drainage system of your house clean and out of any blockage.
Unplug electrical gadgets and machinery and keep away from the reach of water.
Store enough food and drinking water along with your regular medicines with you.
Turn off gas valves and connected devices.
Move family and pets in the safe zone.

Take your vehicles to an upland area, and do not leave them in the garage if evacuating the home.
Do not keep any valuables in homes.

Raise all furniture, bed materials, and appliances on a table or elevated place inside your home.
Block all drains in the home to restrict floodwater from entering your home.
Turn off gas and electricity connections.

Use a stick to walk through water to understand the depth.

Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
Do not drive into flooded areas. If flood waters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away.

Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.
Twelve inches of water is enough to float many vehicles.
Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.

The public should pay close attention to the precautionary messages issued by the government and district administration and act accordingly.
