‘Pending infra projects retarding growth’

Trichy: While the city has been earning laurels for the state, development enthusiasts claim that it is perhaps also a city with the most number of pending infrastructure projects.

Local people opined that Trichy could have excelled in cleanliness, ease of living and economic development surveys had the pending projects been completed on time.

Geographically located in the centre of the state, Trichy was once even considered to be declared as the capital of the state because of its advantage in road connectivity to most parts of the state. However, quite a few pending road projects have been hampering the prospects of the city’s expansion and delaying a solution for its nagging traffic congestion. Both the semi-ring road project and Trichy junction RoB project which were intended to decongest the core area of the city remain incomplete for the past few years now.

Had the pending projects been completed on schedule, suburbs of the city could have witnessed socio-economic development as hotels and commercial establishments would have mushroomed to cater to the visitors and tourists. “As Trichy has been proving its merit in cleanliness, liveability and now economic growth, governments must pay proper attention to granting new projects as well as completing the pending projects,” V B Jaganath, member, Trichy Intra-City Development Endeavours (TIDES), said.

Relocating the congested Gandhi Market to the newly-built integrated vegetable market at Kallikudi, establishing an integrated bus stand at Panchapur and extending the Trichy international airport runway were among the other pending projects halting the growth rate of Trichy.

“To sustain its ascendancy in health indicators, Trichy region needs AIIMS-like facility. Considering the laurels the city has been bringing, governments should give priority to Trichy in implementing welfare projects and schemes,” Dr M A Aleem, member, Trichy District Welfare Fund Committee, said. City development enthusiasts urged the governments to resolve the delay in completing the numerous city infrastructure projects.

List of pending infrastructure projects
Integrated bus terminus | Semi-ring road | Trichy junction RoB | Shifting Gandhi market | Extension of Trichy Airport’s runway
