First Two cases of Omicron Variant of Concern reported in India on 02.12.2021


In the almost at the end of 2nd years of COVID-19 Pandemic 
the first known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was confirmed from a specimen collected on 9 November 2021 in South  Africa and it   was the first reported to WHO from South Africa on 24 November 2021.

This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning and this variant of concern (VOC) is named as Omicron by WHO on 26.11.2021.


In India 
Two cases of the new Covid variant Omicron have been detected in Karnataka, registering India's first reported case of this new variant which has triggered apprehension across the world, bringing back travel restrictions.

One among them is a 66-year-old male who is a South African national. He came to Bengaluru on November 20 and tested positive.

The second person is a 46-year-old doctor working at a government hospital, who has no travel history. He was tested on November 22 as he complained of extreme tiredness, weakness and fever. According to reports, his cycle threshold value was low and his sample was sent to the lab. 
All his 24 primary contacts and 240 secondary contacts have tested negative.

The announcement was  made by the Indian health ministry following the confirmation from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) of India that monitors the genomic variations of the pandemic on 02.12.2021.

As of now about 30  countries including India have reported 375 cases of Omicron variant infection.
