Doctors and Mental Health in Developing Countries

Doctors who practise alternative medicine are more prone to have mental health disturbances in developing countries. Excessive use of alcohol, tobacco products, beetalnuts usage and drug abuse are important causes of their mental health disorders. In addition to the above, familial disputes, extramarital affairs, financial crises and other co-morbid disease health status are also the reasons for their mental illnesses. Mental ill health is more common in middle aged and older female doctors than male doctors who practise in urban than in rural areas. Practice pattern and the number of patients seen by doctors can also influence mental health.
