Dear Editor
COVID-19 and Ramadan 2020
At present in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic as of today 24.4.2020 there are about 2,754,506 confirmed cases with a 20% (192,377) death rate and an 80% (762,128) recovery rate. These cases are reported in 210 countries and territories around the world and in two international conveyances. This week the global death rate is reduced 1% from 21% to 20% as of today.
This year for world Muslims, Ramadan falls in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
After nearly 4 months of this Pandemic, countries which were under lockdown are reopening slowly to improve their economy.
The USA is feeling that the economy is important and wants to reopen its states soon.
In Europe, countries are slowly in a phased manner managing to reopen smaller shops to help the day today living of people.
India is feeling life is more important than the economy. It is relaxing the Curfew to supply the Government's help to reach people through ration shops and by continuing the 100 days job scheme to poor people in rural areas.
The current devastating COVID-19 Pandemic has exposed the inadequate health care capacity and capability of developed countries like the USA.
The current war of spreading COVID-19 infection has dismantled the life and economy of more than 200 countries without use of a single weapon.
COVID-19 Pandemic has shattered the pillars of health infrastructures in each and every country in the world.
The loss of even a single American or a solider of Allied countries is precious and a great loss.
Now a natural organism like a virus kills 50000 Americans and thousands of Europeans.
To date, testing facilities are inadequate in many developing and in many underdeveloped countries. The number of ICU beds, Respiratory ICUs and ventilators are also inadequate in many hospitals globally.
Discrimination and stigmatision of COVID-19 infected people and the dead bodies of the COVID-19 victims are also not uncommon in this Pandemic. Even Churches or crematoriums are refusing to allow the burial of doctors who succumbed to COVID-19 in metropolitan city.
Preventive measures are only in the hands of people. They should maintain social distancing till the Pandemic is over. Personal and respiratory hygiene is also important.
In this year the month of Ramadan, Muslims should cooperate by doing fasting, fasting related activities and all prayers including night prayers at home and do charity in a hygienic way to prevent COVID-19 spread. We need to stay home to help to slow and break the chain of COVID-19 propagation. By doing this together, we will all save lives and the world survives the ill effects of coronavirus.
So cooperative mitigation measures are the need of the hour between the countries and WHO to root out COVID-19 from the globe.
In Ramadan 2020 as per WHO advice we Muslims should also cooperate by avoiding group prayers, gathered for fast breaking activities in mosques or anywhere. Please do all Ramadan fasting related activities at home to keep social distancing and help to prevent coronavirus spread in any level.
