They oppose move to replace MCI with new body
Doctors of all government and about 350 private hospitals in the district staged demonstration and wore black badges on Tuesday responding to a nation-wide stir called by the Indian Medical Association to oppose the proposed legislation seeking to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new body.
Members of IMA and Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association staged a protest in front of the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. They raised slogans demanding withdrawal of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, cautioning that permitting practitioners of alternative medicines such as homoeopathy and ayurveda to adopt allopathy, after completing a bridge course, would undermine the healthcare system in the country.
Functionaries of IMA, Tiruchi branch, said the NMC Bill in the present form will put medical professionals at the mercy of bureaucracy and non-medical administrators.
Welcoming the decision of the Centre to refer the Bill to a Parliamentary Standing Committee, former Vice-Principal of K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, M.A. Aleem apprehended that that allowing AYUSH graduates to practise modern medicine after completing the six-month ‘bridge course’ will promote quackery.
