This year International Epilepsy Day fall on
Valentine Day the celebration in honor of the patron saint of lovers, St. Valentine, takes on greater meaning when you consider He is also the patron saint of epilepsy—a common neurological condition that causes seizures and affects nearly 12 million in India.
How St. Valentine became the patron saint of epilepsy is uncertain. One theorist points out that Valentine sounds much like the German word for “fallen”. Epilepsy was once known as the “falling sickness”. Other legends propose that a 3rd century bishop named Valentine von Terni freed the son of a Roman orator
from an epileptic seizure
Regardless, it would be assumed that people with epilepsy and their families turned to St. Valentine not only for love, but for comfort and hope to enable them to cope with their condition
While St. Valentine is widely known as the patron saint of lovers and is celebrated around the world on February 14, very few people, including doctors, know he also was helpful and beneficent to people with epilepsy in ancient times.
