31,000 students set to write Class XII exams from March 3

TRICHY: The education department in Trichy district is leaving no stone unturned for the smooth conduct of the Plus Two public examinations which commences on March 3. Academicians and doctors have advised the students to maintain calm while writing the board examinations.
In Trichy, 31,284 students including 18,084 boys and 13,200 girls from 400 schools including 77 government, 66 government-aided, 41 matriculation, 13 adi-dravidar welfare department, seven self-finance, one corporation, one social welfare department, three Anglo-Indian, three railway and ordinance factory schools, are going to take the Plus Two examination this year.
The examinations will be held at 91 centres across the district from March 3 to March 25. The number of students - both regular and private - who enrolled to appear in the examination rose to 31,284 compared to 29,776 last year. "The increase in the number of students appearing for the Plus Two examinations is a good trend. We are making every possible effort to conduct the examinations successfully in Trichy district," said K Selvakumar, chief educational officer. The department has constituted 52 flying squads to keep vigil on the students appearing in the exams. The education department has identified few schools in Musiri, Lalgudi, Manapparai and Thuraiyur to be sensitive. So, the district collector has directed the officials to take additional care in the schools to prevent any malpractices during the board examinations.
The education department is also determined to increase the passing percentage this year. Last year, some of the government schools could not achieve 100% results in the examinations. So, the education department took additional care on those schools to achieve the target this year. "Some schools in Uppiliyapuram, Kannanur areas achieved below 65% pass last year. We have arranged for special and motivational classes for the students. Moreover, the headmasters of the schools have been transferred. So, we hope those schools will excel in this year's exams," Selvakumar said.
The district administration said that steps have been taken to avoid inconvenience to the students due to power cuts during the examinations. Similarly, parents are advised to create a conducive environment to their children during the examinations. Doctors said the students should keep themselves mentally and physically fit.
Dr M A Aleem, vice-principal of K A P Viswanatham Government Medical College, Trichy said that students should be more cautious about their food habits during the examinations because spicy and cholesterol food will lead to health consequences. "The students should not try new varieties of food during the examination period because it may not suit their bodies. The consumption of cough syrups, pain killer, during this period is also not advisable. Most importantly, memory pills should not be taken because it will lead to addiction," said Dr Aleem.

TRICHY: Parents of 12 newborns received a surprise gift in the form of a gold ring on Monday as a gesture by AIADMK party workers on chief minister J Jayalalithaa's birthday. These babies were born at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in the last two days.
The fortnight-long celebrations of chief minister's birthday reached its peak on Monday as AIADMK functionaries organised various programmes to celebrate their party chief's birthday.
The 1g gold ring was donated by AIADMK workers led by Trichy West MLA M Paranjothi. Only five of the 12 infants were born on Monday that coincided with Amma's birthday. Though, the other seven were born a day early, they too were considered for the gift as the party workers wanted to donate 12 rings, hospital sources said.
The parents of the newborns were taken aback when they came to know that they will be given gold rings. "My second male child has brought me luck. We didn't expect such a gift. My child is so lucky. Though he was born on February 23, he was gifted the gold ring. We will keep the ring safely throughout our life. I will tell my child about the gold gift during his coming birthdays," said 25-year-old Ramya, a resident of Trichy. "Earlier, I was told by the doctors that the baby will be born on Sunday night. Use of stem cells is only research, says ICMR
From now on, any use of stem cell in patients will be considered research, and not therapy, according to fresh national guidelines. Stem cell use in patients must be done only within the purview of an approved and monitored clinical trial with intent to advance science and medicine.
"In accordance with this stringent definition, every use of stem cells in patients outside an approved clinical trial shall be considered a malpractice. It is hoped that this clear definition will serve to curb the malpractice of stem cell 'therapy' being offered as a new tool for curing untreatable diseases," according to the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Department of Biotechnology.
The decision to drop the word 'therapy' has been taken on the recommendation of a joint drafting committee of the ICMR and the Department to emphasise the fact that stem cells are still not part of standard care.
Hence, there can be no guidelines for therapy until efficacy is proven. These guidelines, issued on Saturday, are intended to cover only stem cell research, both basic and translational, and not therapy. Any stem cell use in patients other than for haematopoietic (producer of red, white blood cells and platelets) stem cell reconstitution for approved indications is investigational at present.
The revised guidelines are aimed at checking exploitation of patients by some clinicians by offering stem cell treatment even though it is still an emerging field of regenerative medicine. There is no conclusive proof of safety or therapeutic efficacy of stem cells in any condition yet.
Use of stem cell holds promise for improving health by restoring the function of cells and organs damaged due to degeneration or injury. Stem cell biology has potential application in several areas of biomedical research including drug development, toxicity testing, developmental biology, disease modelling, and tissue engineering. But like many innovations, stem cell research also involves scientific, ethical and social issues.
Commodification of human cells and tissues
Apart from the challenges of using appropriate stem cells for a particular condition, there are important issues related to use of embryos for creating human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines.
As these may lead to commoditisation of human tissues and cells, there is an inherent risk of exploitation of individuals, particularly the underprivileged, as also the contentious issue of human germline engineering and reproductive cloning.

A super-specialty hospital sans equipment

TRICHY: Finally, Trichy has got a super-specialty and trauma care centre to meet the growing medical needs of poor living in and around the district. But, the Rs 100-crore-premier hospital would just remain a building until it gets its 45crore worth medical equipment to run the show.
The hospital was declared open by the chief minister J Jayalalithaa from Chennai through video conferencing in the presence of staff, students, government chief whip R Manoharan, the district collector Jayashree Muralidharan at the hospital.
Talking to TOI during the inauguration, Dr MA Aleem, the vice-principal of the KAP Viswanatham government medical college, said, "This super-specialty hospital will be a boon for poor and downtrodden people in Trichy and its surrounding districts as the treatment provided here would be on par with AIIMS."
Though the hospital has been inaugurated well before the deadline, it cannot serve the needy in a full-fledged manner immediately. Besides the unavailability of the medical equipment, the new facility would need a lot of doctors, nurses and sanitary workers. Unfortunately, the government was yet release order for recruiting staff for the new facility. So, the hospital administration will have to face flak from the people and from the opposition.
The new block with 440 beds is expected to fulfill the growing needs for specialty treatment. All the floors of the building have been divided into various departments. The orthopaedics and radiodiagnosis ward is on the ground floor of the seven-storey block. While the first floor consists of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery departments, the second will have neurology and neuro-surgery departments. The nephrology and urology departments will function from the third floor and paediatric surgery and plastic surgery will be on the fourth floor. The medical gastroenterology and surgical gastroenterology departments will operate on the fifth. The sixth floor is for medical oncology and surgical oncology departments. The new block will have eight operation theatres.
Dr Kanagasundaram, medical superintendent of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) said they were planning to commence the treatment at the super-specialty hospital from Saturday. "The process is on to get the equipment at the earliest. Nevertheless, we are going to start the treatment at the super-specialty hospital from Saturday after shifting the casualty ward," he said.

Farmers peeved, most welcome healthcare initiatives

TRICHY: The state budget for 2014-15 evoked mixed response from public with the announcement of low-cost medical shops receiving the maximum cheers. However, farmer groups in the region feel they have been given a short shrift by the state government, though they welcomed an allocation of Rs 5,000 crore as crop loan for farmers. Traders heaved a sigh of relief as the budget spared them of taxes.
Puliyur Nagarajan, state vice-president of Congress' agriculture wing, said demands of coconut and banana farmers were ignored. "The state government provided compensation to drought-hit paddy farmers last year. But the plight of other farmers has been ignored in the budget, though they were also affected by drought. It seems that our cry fell on deaf ears," he rued.
Though, the state government announced a few schemes for farmers, it should monitor its implementation, Nagarajan said.
The farming community feels state budget has accorded low priority to agriculture, with Bharatiya Kisan Sangam terming it as 'useless' for farmers. "The state government should give more importance to the agriculture sector. But we welcome hike in crop loan allocation from Rs 3,600 crore to Rs 5,000 crore and the announcement to transform waste land to arable land," said Ayilai Sivasuriyan of CPI's agriculture wing, while demanding higher outlay for crop insurance. "Many of the drought-affected farmers did not get crop insurance last year. So, it should have been increased," Sivasuriyan said.
"The budget has upset the farmers. If free rice was not provided by government, many would have died due to drought," said P Ayyakannu, the state vice-president of BKS, adding "The budget that allotted Rs 3,500 crore to cleanse the Coovum river in Chennai has allocated only Rs 110 crore to address water storage."
Meanwhile, higher allocation for healthcare has been welcomed by consumer groups. "Though health department got the necessary boost in the budget, unhygienic and corruption-ridden general hospitals and primary health centres are enemies of public health. So, quality service at the point of delivery must be ensured on priority," said S Pushpavanam, secretary of state consumer protection council.

"Rs 7,005 crore allotment to health sector is a boon to healthcare sector. Amma Medical shops will help medium and low-income people. As far as Trichy is concerned, we have to utilise the health facilities free of cost," said Dr Aleem.
Announcement of a super specialty hospital in Thanjavur has also been given the thumbs up. It will come up on the premises of Thanjavur medical college hospital at an outlay of Rs 150 crore. "People from many districts around Thanjavur will get specialty care. We have enough space on the premises to construct the block," said Dr Sankara Narayanan, medical superintendent of Thanjavur medical college hospital.
Though, the tax-less budget cheered the traders' fraternity, they said many demands were ignored. "We are happy that taxes have not been imposed. We expected that the government to allow payment of single tax. But it was not announced. Likewise, many other demands were also not addressed," said AM Vikramaraja, state president of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu Vikkiramaraja.

Stroke In Women
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death for men but the third leading cause for women, and with the aging of the population, numbers continue to rise.
How our society adapts to the anticipated increase in stroke prevalence in women is vitally important. Now more than ever, it is critical to identify women at higher risk for stroke and initiate the appropriate prevention strategies.
There are certain risk factors for stroke are unique to women, such as pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives, and hormone replacement therapy. Some medical conditions increase stroke risk are much more common in women. These include migraine with aura and cerebral vein thrombosis. So we really need to take gender into account when assessing stroke risk.
Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy is associated with a doubling in the risk of stroke later in life, even if blood pressure returns to normal after delivery. Something happens to the vasculature when pre-eclampsia occurs that doesn't return to normal at the end of pregnancy.
So it is important to ask older women when assessing their stroke risk whether they had pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, even if this was 30, 40, or even 50 years ago. If they did, then they are at higher stroke risk so will need to be screened for blood pressure and other risks more often, or they may need to start screening earlier.
Preventing Pre-eclampsia
One of the new recommendations is that women with a history of high blood pressure before pregnancy should be considered for low-dose aspirin and/or calcium supplement therapy to decrease pre-eclampsia risks.
Pregnant women with moderately high blood pressure (150 to 159 mmHg/100 to 109 mmHg) may be considered for blood pressure medication, whereas expectant mothers with severe high blood pressure (160/110 mmHg or above) should be treated.
Screening women for high blood pressure before they begin taking birth control pills is needed because the combination raises stroke risk. Women with migraine headaches with aura should also be encouraged to stop smoking in order to avoid increased risk.
At the other end of the age spectrum screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in women older than age 75 years is a must.
Women over the age of 75 have a higher risk than men of having AF. But sometimes they are completely asymptomatic. We need to screen these older women more aggressively.
How our society adapts to the anticipated increase in stroke prevalence in women is vitally important. Now more than ever, it is critical to identify women at higher risk for stroke and initiate the appropriate prevention strategies.
There are certain risk factors for stroke are unique to women, such as pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives, and hormone replacement therapy. Some medical conditions increase stroke risk are much more common in women. These include migraine with aura and cerebral vein thrombosis. So we really need to take gender into account when assessing stroke risk.
Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy is associated with a doubling in the risk of stroke later in life, even if blood pressure returns to normal after delivery. Something happens to the vasculature when pre-eclampsia occurs that doesn't return to normal at the end of pregnancy.
So it is important to ask older women when assessing their stroke risk whether they had pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, even if this was 30, 40, or even 50 years ago. If they did, then they are at higher stroke risk so will need to be screened for blood pressure and other risks more often, or they may need to start screening earlier.
Preventing Pre-eclampsia
One of the new recommendations is that women with a history of high blood pressure before pregnancy should be considered for low-dose aspirin and/or calcium supplement therapy to decrease pre-eclampsia risks.
Pregnant women with moderately high blood pressure (150 to 159 mmHg/100 to 109 mmHg) may be considered for blood pressure medication, whereas expectant mothers with severe high blood pressure (160/110 mmHg or above) should be treated.
Screening women for high blood pressure before they begin taking birth control pills is needed because the combination raises stroke risk. Women with migraine headaches with aura should also be encouraged to stop smoking in order to avoid increased risk.
At the other end of the age spectrum screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in women older than age 75 years is a must.
Women over the age of 75 have a higher risk than men of having AF. But sometimes they are completely asymptomatic. We need to screen these older women more aggressively.

Mini-marathon to promote awareness on road safety

TRICHY: About 1,500 people participated in a mini-marathon held here on Sunday morning for promoting awareness on road safety measures. The 5-km run started from the district court and went along the railway station and the central bus stand before finally ending at the Union Club.
The event disappointed many children since it was only for people above 15 years. Organisers from the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) said the run was only for people above 15 years as it is they who indulge in rash driving. So the awareness run was held with participation from people above 15 years.
The traffic police officials said such kind of awareness measures are needed since teenagers flout the law whenever the law enforcement authorities are not on roads. Explaining them the rules and the dangers would help them to drive better, they added.
Police were deployed to regulate the public as many thronged the registration site.
Vice-president of KAP Vishwanathan Medical College, Dr MA Aleem, flagged off the event from the district court premises. Placards and banners bearing messages on safe driving were held aloft by the volunteers from BIM along the route.

திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவ மனை, மணப்பாறை அரசு மருத்துவமனைகளில் மட் டும், குறை பிரசவம் மற்றும் எடை குறைந்த குழந்தை களை பராமரிக்க இன்குபேட்டர் உள்ளிட்ட சிறப்பு மருத்துவ வசதிகள் உள் ளன. மாவட்டத்தில் மற்ற இடங்களில் உள்ள அரசு மருத்துவமனைகள், ஆரம்ப சுகாதார நிலையங்களில் இவ்வசதி இல்லை. இந்த குறையை போக்க சிறப்பு இன்குபேட்டர் உள்ளிட்ட வசதிகளுடன் கூடிய சிறப்பு 108 ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வசதி ஏற்படுத்தப்படும் என்று அரசு அறிவித்திருந்தது.
அதன்படி இவ்வசதிகள் இல்லாத மருத்துவமனைக ளில் பிறக்கும் குழந்தைகளு க்கு, சிறப்பு சிகிச்சை தேவைப்பட்டால் இந்த 108 ஆம்புலன்ஸ் மூலம் திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு கொண்டு வரப்படும். இதற் கென சிறப்பு பயிற்சி பெற்ற மருத்துவ ஊழியர் ஒருவர் இந்த ஆம்புலன்சில் இருப் பார்.
அந்த வகையில் தமிழகத்தில் இதுவரை 10 மாவட்டங்களில் ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வசதி ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டுள் ளது. தற்போது 11வது சிறப்பு 108 ஆம்புலன்ஸ் திருச்சிக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. திருச்சி கலெக்டர் அலுவலகத்தில் நேற்று இதற்கென நடந்த நிகழ்ச்சியில் சிறப்பு 108 ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சேவையை கலெக் டர் ஜெயஸ்ரீ துவக்கி வைத் தார்.

திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனையில் ரூ.55 கோடி செலவில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பிரிவின் கட்டுமான பணிகள் நிறைவடந்த நிலையில் சிறப்பு மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பிரிவு விரைவில் திறக்கப்படும் என மருத்துவமனையின் முதல்வர் டாக்டர் கார்க்குழலி தெரிவித்தார். திருச்சி கி.ஆ.பெ.விஸ்வநாதம் அரசு மருத்துவக்கல்லூரியுடன் இணைந்த மாகாத்மா காந்தி அரசு மருத்துவமனை சூப்பர் ஸ்பெஷாலிட்டியாக தரம் உயர்த்தப்படும் என முதல்-அமைச்சர் ஜெயலலிதா அறிவித்தார். மேலும் இதற்காக ரூ.100 கோடி நிதி ஒதுக்கினார். இதையடுத்து திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் கட்டுமான பணிகள் விரைவாக நடந்தன. இந்த நிலையில் பணிகள் பெருமளவு முடிந்து இறுதி கட்டத்தை எட்டியுள்ளது.
திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனை 660 படுக்கை வசதிகளுடன் செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றது. இந்த மருத்துவமனையில் ரூ.55 கோடி செலவில் விபத்து மற்றும் உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பிரிவுவின் கட்டிட பணிகள் நடந்து வருகிறது. இந்த பணிகள் அனைத்தும் முடிந்து இறுதி கட்டத்தை எட்டியுள்ளது. கட்டிடத்தில் மின் இணைப்பு மற்றும் இறுதி கட்ட பணிகள் நடைபெற வேண்டி உள்ளது. இந்த மாதத்திற்குள் பணிகள் அனைத்து முடிந்து கட்டிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பிரிவுவை முதல்-அமைச்சர் ஜெயலலிதா விரைவில் திறந்து வைக்க உள்ளார்.
இந்த சிகிச்சை பிரிவு தரைத்தளம் மற்றும் 6 மேல் தளங்களுடன் அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. தரைதத்தளத்தில் முடநீக்கியல் துறையும், நுண் கதிர் பரிசோதனை பிரிவும் செயல்படும். முதல் தளத்தில் இருதய நோய் துறையும், 2-வது தளத்தில் நரம்பியல் மற்றும் மூளை மருத்துவ துறையும், 3-வது தளத்தில் சிறுநீரக துறையும், 4-வது தளத்தில் குழந்தைகளுக்கான சிகிச்சை துறையும், 5-வது தளத்தில் இரைப்பை மற்றும் குடல் நோய் துறையும், 6-வது தளத்தில் புற்றுநோய் சிகிச்சை துறையும் இயங்கும். 6 தளத்திலும் துறைகள் சார்ந்த நோய்களுக்கு அறுவை சிகிச்சை அரங்குகள் அமைக்கப்படுகிறது. உயர் சிகிச்சைக்காக ரூ.45 கோடியில் நவீன கருவிகள் வாங்கப்பட உள்ளன.
இந்த கட்டிடத்தில் மொத்தம் 440 படுக்கைகள் வசதிகள் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. தற்போது உள்ள மருத்துவர்களை விட கூடுதலாக டாக்டர்கள் மற்றும் மருத்துவ ஊழியர்கள் நியமனம் செய்யப்பட உள்ளனர். இந்த விபத்து மற்றும் உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பிரிவு செயல்பட தொடங்கியதும் அதி நவீன உயர்தர சிகிச்சைகளை நோயாளிகளுக்கு கூடுதலாக வழங்க முடியும்.
திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் 2013-ம் ஆண்டில் உள் நோயாளிகளாக 59 ஆயிரத்து 537 பேரும், புற நோயாளிகளாக 8 லட்சத்து 72 ஆயிரத்து 300 பேரும் சிகிச்சை பெற்றுள்ளனர். கடந்த 2 ஆண்டுகளை ஒப்பிடும் போது நோயாளிகளின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகமாகி உள்ளது. அனைவரும் நல்ல முறையில் சிகிச்சை பெற்று திரும்பி உள்ளனர்.
பக்கத்து மாவட்டங்களை சேர்ந்த நோயாளிகள் பலர் உயர் சிகிச்சைக்காக திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு அதிக அளவில் வருகின்றனர். கடந்த ஆண்டில் மட்டும் சிறிய மற்றும் பெரிய அறுவை சிகிச்சைகள் என மொத்தம் 20 ஆயிரத்து 803 அறுவை சிகிச்சைகள் நடந்துள்ளன.
திருச்சி கி.ஆ.பெ.விசுவநாதம் அரசு மருத்துவ கல்லூரியில் எம்.பி.எஸ்.எஸ். படிப்பில் மாணவர் சேர்க்கை எண்ணிக்கை 100-ல் இருந்து 150 ஆக அதிகரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதற்காக கட்டிட வசதிகளை அதிகப்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். மருத்துவ குழுவினர் ஏற்கனவே ஒரு முறை வந்து ஆய்வு செய்துள்ளனர். இந்த நிலையில் மீண்டும் ஆய்வு செய்ய விரைவில் வருகை தர உள்ளனர். புதிதாக திறக்கப்பட்ட மகப்பேறு மருத்துவமனை கட்டிடத்தில் கடந்த ஒரு மாதத்தில் 450 குழந்தைகள் பிறந்துள்ளன. இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார்.
பேட்டியின் போது துணை முதல்வர் டாக்டர் எம்.ஏ.அலீம், சூப்பிரண்டு கனகசுந்தரம், இணை இயக்குனர் (நலப்பணிகள்) மனோகர் ஆகியோர் உடன் இருந்தனர். முன்னதாக புதிதாக திறக்கப்பட்ட மகப்பேறு மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை பெறும் குழந்தைகளை துணை முதல்வர் டாக்டர் அலீம், சூப்பிரண்டு கனகசுந்தரம் ஆகியோர் பார்வையிட்டு ஆய்வு செய்தனர்.

பெண் குழந்தைகளை பாதுகாக்க டாக்டர்கள் மற்றும் மருத்துவ ஊழியர்கள் சமூக உணர்வுடன் நடந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று திருச்சியில் நடந்த கருத்தரங்கில் கலெக்டர் ஜெயஸ்ரீ முரளிதரன் பேசினார்.
கருத்தரங்கு
கருவில் இருக்கும் குழந்தை ஆணா, பெண்ணா என்பதை கண்டறிவது சட்டப்படி குற்றம் என்பது பற்றிய பயிற்சி கருத்தரங்கம் திருச்சியில் நேற்று நடைபெற்றது. சுகாதார துறை சார்பில் நடைபெற்ற இந்த கருத்தரங்கில் அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் மருத்துவமனை டாக்டர்கள், ஸ்கேன் சென்டர் உரிமையாளர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டனர். இந்த கருத்தரங்கை திருச்சி மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் ஜெயஸ்ரீ முரளிதரன் தொடங்கி வைத்தார். கலெக்டர் தலைமையில் அனைவரும் பாலின பாகுபாடுக்கு எதிரான உறுதிமொழி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர்.

பெண் குழந்தைகளை பாதுகாக்க மருத்துவர்களும், ஸ்கேன் சென்டரில் பணியாற்றுபவர்களும் சமூக உணர்வுடன் நடந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். இல்லையெனில் மனிதர்களாக பிறந்ததில் அர்த்தம் இல்லை. மருத்துவ கணக்கெடுப்பின் படி, கடந்த 20 வருடங்களில் ஒரு கோடி பெண் குழந்தைகள் கருச்சிதைவு நடைபெற்றுள்ளது என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. யுனிசெப் புள்ளி விவரப்படி, சமூகத்தில் வேரூன்றி இருக்கும் ஆண் குழந்தை வேண்டும் என்ற கீழ்த்தரமான எண்ணத்தின் விளைவின் காரணமாக இந்தியாவில் 8000 குழந்தைகளில் 7997 பெண் குழந்தைகள் கருக்கலைப்பு நடைபெற்றுள்ளது.
பெண் குழந்தைகள் குறைவு
திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் 2011 கணக்கெடுப்பின்படி, 5 வயதிற்குட்பட்ட குழந்தைகளில் ஆயிரம் ஆண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு 947 பெண் குழந்தைகள் மட்டுமே உள்ளனர். பெண் சிசு கொலைக்கு கூறப்படும் சமூகக் காரணங்களில் வறுமை முக்கியமானதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. டெல்லி, பஞ்சாப் போன்ற வளர்ச்சியடைந்த மாநிலங்களில் கூட இக்கொடுமை அதிகமாக நடைபெறுகிறது. எனவே, இதற்கு வறுமை முக்கிய காரணமல்ல என்பதும், சமூகத்தில் ஆண் குழந்தை இருந்தால் தான் கவுரவம் என்ற பிற்போக்கு மனப்பான்மை தான் காரணம் என்பது நிதர்சனமான உண்மையாகும்.
அபாயம்
பெண் குழந்தைகள் எந்த வகையிலும் ஆண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு சோடை போகாது. பெற்றோர்களை கடைசி வரை காப்பாற்றுவது பெண் குழந்தைகள் தான். பெண் சிசு கொலையால் பிற்காலத்தில் வரக்கூடிய சமூக விளைவுகள் மிகவும் அபாயகரமானதாக இருக்கும். திருமணம் செய்ய பெண் கிடைக்காத நிலையும், பெண்ணை விலைகொடுத்து வாங்க வேண்டிய சூழ்நிலையும் உண்டாகும். இதுதவிர, ஒரு பெண் பல ஆண்களை திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ளக் கூடிய வன்கொடுமையும் உண்டாகும் நிலை ஏற்பட வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது. பெண் சிசு கொலையை தடுப்பதை சட்டத்தால் மட்டுமே மாற்றிவிட முடியாது. எறும்பு ஊற கல்லும் தேயும் என்ற சொல்லுக்கேற்ப மக்களுக்கு நாம் சொல்லி, சொல்லித்தான் மனமாற்றத்தைக் கொண்டு வரவேண்டும்.

ஆண் குழந்தை பிறந்தது
திருச்சி மாவட்டம் மணப்பாறை பகுதியை சேர்ந்தவர் மாமுண்டி. விவசாயியான இவரது மனைவி விஜயா(வயது 29). இவர்களுக்கு 4 மகள்கள் உள்ளனர். இந்த நிலையில் விஜயா மீண்டும் கருவுற்றார். கடந்த திங்கட்கிழமை பிரசவத்திற்காக மணப்பாறை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்த்தனர்.
அங்கு அவருக்கு ஆண் குழந்தை பிறந்தது. அந்த குழந்தைக்கு 2 கைகளும், 2 கால்களும், வயிற்று பகுதியில் வளர்ச்சியடையாத நிலையில் உடலின் பின்பகுதியும் அதில் 2 கைகளும், 2 கால்களும் இருந்தது. இதனை கண்டு டாக்டர்கள் அதிர்ச்சியடைந்தனர். 2 குழந்தைகள் ஒட்டி பிறந்ததில் ஒரு குழந்தைக்கு ஜீன்கள் சரியாக வளராதது தெரிய வந்தது.
அறுவை சிகிச்சை மூலம் அகற்ற...
இதையடுத்து அந்த ஆண் குழந்தையை நேற்று திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு சிகிச்சைக்காக அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் பிறந்த குழந்தைகளுக்கு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கும் வார்டில் இன்குபேட்டரில் அந்த ஆண் குழந்தை வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த குழந்தையின் வயிற்று பகுதியில் தலை மற்றும் உடல் இல்லாமல் ஒட்டியுள்ள 2 கை, 2 கால்கள் மற்றும் உடலின் பின்பகுதியை அறுவை சிகிச்சை மூலம் அகற்ற டாக்டர்கள் முடிவு செய்துள்ளனர்.
இதற்கான நடவடிக்கையை திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனை டீன் வள்ளிநாயகம் தலைமையில் துணை முதல்வர் டாக்டர் அலீம், மருத்துவமனை கண்காணிப்பாளர் கனகசுந்தரம், குழந்தைகள் அறுவை சிகிச்சை மருத்துவர் டாக்டர் பாஸ்கரன் ஆகியோர் மேற்கொண்டுள்ளனர்.
முதல்–அமைச்சர் மருத்துவ காப்பீட்டு திட்டம்
வருகிற திங்கட்கிழமை அறுவை சிகிச்சை நடைபெற ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் இந்த அறுவை சிகிச்சை முதல்–அமைச்சரின் மருத்துவ காப்பீட்டு திட்டத்தில் மேற்கொள்ள இருப்பதாக அரசு மருத்துவமனை டாக்டர்கள் வட்டாரத்தில் தெரிவித்தனர்.
தற்போது அந்த ஆண் குழந்தை டாக்டர்களின் தீவிர கண்காணிப்பில் உள்ளது. அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்கு தேவையான ஒவ்வொரு பரிசோதனைகளையும் டாக்டர்கள் மேற்கொண்டு வருகின்றனர். இது போன்று வித்தியாசமான அறுவை சிகிச்சை திருச்சி அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் முதல் முறையாக நடைபெற உள்ளதாக டாக்டர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
