Dear Editor

Right to die with dignity in India

In January 2023, the Supreme Court (SC) of India had recognised the right to die with dignity, making it easier for terminally ill patients to cease treatment.

It has laid down ‘Advance Medical Directive’ regarding the
‘right of a person to die with dignity. This would serve as a fruitful means for making decision, when a person is faced with a medical condition with no hope of recovery and is continued on life support system/medicines.

After devising a passive euthanasia mechanism in 2018 allowing a dignified end for terminally-ill patients in permanent vegetative state, Supreme Court of India in 2024 has also said such patients had a fundamental right to palliative care till their eventual death.
