Dear Editor
Symptoms of Omicron are “very, very mild” compared with those of the Delta variant.
Unlike in other variants, patients with Omicron infection have not reported loss of smell or taste and there has been no major drop in oxygen levels with the new variant.
The following are symptoms of Omicron:
A. Cough, cold and fever are common symptoms of Covid, be it Omicron or Delta.
Pulmonary alveolar involvement by Delta induces a dry cough, which is common in Delta infection.
Tracheo bronchitis of Omicron causes secretions not seen with Delta. So a Sore throat with mild secretions is seen with Omicron infection.
Often patients do not expectorate the secretions but may just swallow.
B. Sore throat is a very common symptom of Omicron, not so much of Delta, but it may happen sometimes.
C. Headache, tiredness, body pain are apparently more prominent symptoms of Omicron infection than of Delta.
D. Breathing problems are a very rare symptom of Omicron but very common in Delta.
E. General upper respiratory symptoms (cold, cough, sore throat) plus prominent gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) along with fever, tiredness muscle pain in the lower back and lower limbs are the common symptoms of Omicron.
So self limiting Fever for a couple of days, a lot of body ache, sore throat, tiredness and occasionally loose bowel motions may be the symptoms of Omicron infection.
The symptoms have evolved because of the mutation that the virus has undergone. Also, the symptoms vary from person to person, depending on their immunity, vaccination status. Symptoms only offer clues and are not sure-shot ways to know about the infection.
Omicron has departed from the traditional Covid symptoms as loss of smell and taste and breathing troubles are rarely present in Omicron cases. Scratchy throat and some other common cold and flu-like symptoms have been associated with Omicron. The absence of respiratory problems has made Omicron appear less severe.
So rest at home with an adequate immune boosting diet with or without symptomatic treatment may help to relieve symptoms.
So to avoid COVID-19 or Delta or Omicron infection it is better to get vaccinated against COVID-19 infections along with wearing of masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing.

Dear Editor
New drugs for COVID-19 infection
Today, 14.01.2022, the World Health Organisation has recommended two new drugs for COVID-19 infection.
One is baricitinib for severe or critical COVID-19 infection and the other is Sotrovimab for mild or moderate COVID-19 infection.
Newly recommended baricitinib is a Janus kinase (JAk) inhibitor, and this agent along with the corticosteroids can suppress the overstimulated immune system in severe or critical COVID-19 infection. This is This is an oral drug used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
Sotrovimab is a monoclonal antibody which is recommended for COVID-19 infection in older, unvaccinated, immunocompromised patients with underlying diabetes, hypertension and obesity at high risk of hospitalization.
This agent is an alternative to casirivimab-imdevimab, a monoclonal antibody cocktail in mild to moderate COVID-19 infection.
These two newly recommended drugs - baricitinib and sotrovimab - have been invited for WHO Prequalification, which assesses the quality, efficacy and safety of priority health products to increase access in lower income countries.

Dear Editor
COVID-19 Vaccination in India
In the fight against COVID-19, India has crossed a historic 150 COVID-19 vaccination mark today (07.01.2022) with the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the COVID-19 vaccination program for children aged 15 to 18 years of age, within five days (03.01.2022 to 07.01.2023) of its initiation, about 1.5 crore children were vaccinated against COVID-19 in India.
As of today 07.01.2022, over 90% of the Indian adult population has already received the first dose of vaccine against COVID-19.
"It is a huge number in terms of statistics. It is not lesser than a surprise for most of the big countries of the world. But it is a symbol of the capability of the 130 crore citizens of India. It is a symbol of self- confidence and self-reliance," our Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today.
The Government of India has also decided that a precautionary dose of vaccine will be started for healthcare and frontline workers starting January 10, 2022. Citizens above 60 years facing co-morbidities will have the option of taking a precautionary dose on the advice of their doctor.
Senior citizens will have to show a medical certificate that shows they have specified co-morbidities to be eligible for a precautionary dose. They will have to get a certificate from a registered medical practitioner that can be scanned and uploaded on the CoWIN portal or produced at a vaccination centre.
The gap between the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and the third, which is being called a "precaution dose", is likely to be 9 to 12 months.
Official data show there are at least 137.5 million people above the age of 60 years who could be eligible for the precaution dose.
One could give an additional dose of the same vaccine but the results aren't as good as when the jabs are mixed.
With the emergence of the highly contagious Omicron variant of coronavirus, many fully vaccinated people are at risk of getting infected again.
A booster is given to people with weak immunity, especially the elderly, and those with low antibody levels. The idea is to increase the level of protection by increasing the antibodies by taking the exact same amount of another shot of the Covid vaccine.
