Stick to safety
In the midst of summer, it is imperative for people to safeguard themselves from COVID-19 by remaining indoors. For, travel increases chances of contracting and spreading COVID-19. We are still in a spot of bother and need to exercise abundant caution by sticking to the safety procedures. Also, one must take care to consume adequate fluids to build immunity, live in well-ventilated space.

Re: There is a real danger that covid-19 will become entrenched as a disease of poverty
Dear Editor
COVID-19 and Poverty
According to the World Bank, Global extreme poverty increased in 2020 for the first time in over 20 years as the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic compounds the forces of conflict and climate change, which were already slowing poverty reduction progress.
The COVID-19 pandemic was estimated to push an additional 88 million to 115 million people into extreme poverty in 2021, with the total rising to as many as 150 million by 2021, depending on the severity of the economic contraction.
The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated economies worldwide. Although lockdowns are an effective measure to halt the spread of COVID-19, many people around the world lost their jobs and livelihoods. As a result, some find it impossible to support themselves and their families.
Handling the COVID-19 pandemic has been no easy task, and weighing out the economic costs of lockdowns to public health has proven to be nearly impossible. However, being the country to reduce poverty at the fastest rate in history, there is always hope for recovery in India.
Now during the second wave of COVID-19, the restrictions on mobility have amplified losses for small businesses, which were yet to recover from the initial impact of the pandemic. Several sectors such as aviation, tourism, retail, entertainment and restaurants are again worried, fearing a repeat of 2020.
Experts estimate that if vaccinations are not ramped up and the virus is not contained by the end of May, it could have a severe impact on business activity ultimately leading to massive loss of jobs and income. That could push more people into poverty.

World Meningitis Day
24 April 2021
- M.A.Aleem Neurologist #Trichy #Tamilnadu #India
World Meningitis Day helps to raise awareness about meningitis - a potentially deadly disease that can kill in a matter of hours or cause lifelong disability.
Meningitis continues to be a major global public health issue causing up to 5 million cases each year, including epidemics of new strains that spread between countries and across the world.
In November 2020, the Seventy-Third World Health Assembly approved the first ever resolution on meningitis prevention and control and the Defeating meningitis by 2030 global road map. WHO supports efforts to #DefeatMeningitis in light of this new global strategy that aims to eliminate bacterial meningitis epidemics and reduce deaths and disability from the disease.
What you should know
Meningitis can strike everyone and at all ages – it can be fatal within a few hours and cause lifelong disability.
Meningitis epidemics can happen fast with serious health, economic and social consequences.
Meningitis is a medical emergency and must be treated quickly.
Symptoms of meningitis can include:
◦ stiff neck;
◦ fever;
◦ sensitivity to light;
◦ confusion and drowsiness;
◦ headaches;
◦ vomiting;
◦ rash;
◦ seizures;
◦ infants may:
- have a bulging fontanelle (soft spot)
- be droopy and unresponsive
◦ Not everyone will get all of these symptoms and they can occur in any order.
Vaccination against meningococcus, pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae type b protect against common causes of meningitis. New vaccines will save more lives over the next decade.
Meningitis is one of the leading causes of neurological disability, which can last a lifetime – the Defeating Meningitis by 2030 global road map addresses this issue alongside prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
By 2030, countries have committed to:
◦ eliminating bacterial meningitis epidemics;
◦ reducing cases of vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis by 50% and deaths by 70%;
◦ reducing disability and improving the quality of life for meningitis survivors

Second Wave of COVID-19 With Newer Symptoms - M.A.Aleem Neurologist #Trichy #Tamilnadu #India
Second Wave of COVID-19 With Newer Symptoms
COVID-19 has severely affected our health system and the number of patients reaching the hospital is increasing every day.
India including Tamilnadu and Trichy is witnessing the possible second wave of coronavirus. The current wave is spreading faster than last year as it was mostly the elderly who were infected with the COVID-19 virus last year. However, this time around, the patients are mostly children and young adults .
The current spread of coronavirus is said to have brought new symptoms of the infection
While the usual symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, body ache, loss of smell and taste, chills, breathlessness, several studies are suggesting that red eyes, gastrointestinal conditions, and hearing impairment should not be taken lightly as they might also be a result of contracting the COVID-19 .
Here are a few more symptoms that we should look out for:
Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
The COVID-19 infection impacts the upper respiratory system. According to new studies, there are several symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and nausea which should not be taken lightly. It's a good idea to get yourself tested if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
Red Eyes:
Red eyes or conjunctivitis is a sign of several viral infections. In this, people develop redness, swelling and the eye becomes watery. As per a Chinese study, people who got infected with a new strain of coronavirus showed this symptom .
Brain fog
COVID-19 is known to cause memory and cognitive complications. Experiencing confusion or difficulty in remembering things could also be a sign of a COVID-19 complication. There may be other reasons for these symptoms, but it is worth checking for.
Cough that sounds different
Coughing is one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19 infection as the virus primarily attacks the upper respiratory tract. However, people who have survived that infection recount that it's not the usual cough that one gets. Instead, this one is more persistent and changes your voice.
Hearing impairment
A study published in the International Journal of Audiology said that the COVID-19 infection can lead to auditory problems. The researchers found 56 studies that identified an association between COVID-19 and auditory and vestibular problems. If you are experiencing some kind of hearing impairment or vertigo then that could be a sign of COVID-19 infection.
Loss of smell, taste
Some people also experience distorted smell or taste much before other, more common symptoms of COVID-19 infection.

Look for new symptoms
Since the second wave of COVID-19 virus infection affects children, it has become important to look out for new symptoms in addition to fever, body ache, loss of smell and taste and breathlessness. Studies have suggested that red eyes, gastrointestinal conditions, unusual cough, brain fog and hearing impairment should not be taken lightly

Stick to safety protocol
It has become imperative for voters to wear face masks due to the risks caused by the second wave of COVID-19 infection. Voters must not hesitate to go through thermal screening and make it a point to use sanitisers. People need to make sure that there is no crowding at polling stations, and unfailingly use gloves to exercise their franchise in the electronic voting machine. While it is indeed the responsibility of citizens to cast votes without fail in a democracy, it is equally important to minimise risks to others and oneself.
