Plastic ban in city from today

The ban on plastics less than 50 microns will become effective from Friday in the city.
As per the order issued by the Tiruchi City Corporation, sale of plastic carry bags, non-recyclable plastics, and use and throw cups will not be allowed in the city limit. Similarly, manufacturing, storing and selling of plastics less than 50 microns have also been banned.
The City Health Officer has been empowered to take action against those using, selling, storing and manufacturing of plastics less than 50 microns. The violators will be slapped fine as per the 2016 rules. It is said that fine to the tune of Rs. 500 to Rs. 50,000 can be slapped against the violators.
To enforce the ban effectively, the Corporation had conducted a number of meetings with various stakeholders including whole sale and retail merchants of plastic bags, stock agents, leading grocery merchants, owners of sweet stall and bakeries. They were requested to extend their cooperation to make the city free of non-degradable plastics.
Similarly, meat stalls, tea stalls, eateries and restaurants were also strictly asked not to use polythene bags to make parcel of food packets.
Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer N. Ravichandran chaired a meeting on enforcing the ban on Thursday. Officials were asked to take effective steps to enforce the ban.
A senior official of the Corporation told
The Hindu that no one had licence to produce plastic in the town lime. However, there were a number of stockists, wholesale merchants and retailers of plastics particularly polythene bags. They had been warned of strict action if they sold banned plastic items.
